Yongwoo Lee is an art theoretician and curator. He is the president of the IBA (International Biennale Association) since 2014.
Over the last thirty years, he has initiated to present the aesthetics of the difference internationally while reexamining and curating exhibitions related to discourses of visual culture as a social practice connecting art, technology and information. He was the founding director and the Artistic Director of the Gwangju Biennale has served as the president and overall director of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation between 2008 and 2014.
He was a professor of art history and visual culture at the Korea University and has lectured at many different colleges across the States and in Europe. He obtained his Ph.D in art history and aesthetics at Oxford University. He is also the editorial director of critical art journal NOON since 2009. Dr. Lee has published books on new media art and audience studies that include Nam June Paik (Samsung Publication), Origins of Video Art (Munye Madang), Information and Reality (Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh, U.K).
